What are Quats and why does the food & drink industry need to move away from using them.
The problem with Quats
Quats or QACs is the shortened term for Quaternary Ammonium Compounds - a type of biocide, typically found in many cleaning and disinfecting products. Quats are efficient at adhering to surfaces. This means they leave a residue that is potentially harmful to health and the environment. Because of this, cleaning is usually a 2-phase process - firstly cleaning the surface with the product, then secondly rinsing the surface with water. If surfaces are not rinsed, Quats can be transferred on to the food from contact with these surfaces.
With the implementation of the European Biocidal Products Register (BPR) in 2012, all biocides became more controlled, and as part of this Quats now have a maximum residue level (MRL). This means that there is a level at which they can become harmful to humans, animals and the environment. Consequently, the use of disinfectants that contain Quats is restricted.
QFD is an innovative & highly effective surface cleaner and degreaser. It does not contain Quats, sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or alcohol. QFD leaves no residue and can be used as often as required with no detrimental effect on humans, animals or the environment.
